What is your name?: | Danica |
Where are you from?: | Ottawa, Ontario, Canada |
Tell us about why you use CPAP and how you got diagnosed.: | I got diagnosed by a fluke. I was 22 and seeing a doctor while away at school who shrugged me off as depressed after I complained that I was sleeping 12 hours a night, taking a 3 hour nap in the afternoon, and still being exhausted. I went home and my family doctor sent me for a sleep study. Because I was a student, the clinic miraculously allowed me to do my consultation, sleep study, and followup over two consecutive days. The sleep doctor said if I didn’t already have the appointment, he wouldn’t have let me even do the sleep study. Was he ever surprised the next day! I technically have Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome, which sortof translates to moderate OSA. |
What do you LOVE about CPAP treatment?: | I use my CPAP because it helps me get refreshing sleep, and I don’t feel depressed and anxious anymore. My quality of life is so much better using it! I make it cuter by putting owl stickers on my machine. |
Any advice for other CPAP Babes?: | Stick with it! It took me almost a year to finally feel like I didn’t want to sleep forever and get “caught up.” I would also say, if you are just starting, don’t expect to keep it on all night for a few weeks. Build up your stamina! Stick with it as long as you can stand, then rip it off, have a good cry, and try again the next night. Also, keep in touch with your sleep specialist, they are really helpful. The mask I started with and thought I wanted wasn’t what I stuck with at all, and the specialist was really good with helping me figure it out. |
